I Dream of Rome

I Dream of Rome

It’s a warm summer morning and life feels rather surreal as we walk down the cobblestone alleyways that lead us to our destination. Our path is laid with Roman balconies and empty outdoor restaurants. The city is sleepy…which is something that we have in common, but the early start is worth it as we approach the all mighty Piazza Novana. We arrived in Rome the night before and by the time we reached this spot, it was already dark. The Piazza looked lovely all lit up at night, but there was something about seeing this grand square in the morning sunlight that gave me goosebumps. Long have I thought about what it would be like to stand exactly where I was…looking up at the creations of some of the most incredible sculptors in history…

Naturally, we immediately started taking photos. After a few shots, I couldn’t help but take a minute to myself to look around and take it all in. You see…where I’m from, we don’t have amazing sculptures and art pieces on every corner. No, we build square structures and live on quaint residential streets. It’s funny, because, in this moment, I couldn’t be more grateful for where I’m from. When I see Piazza Novana for the first time…I really see it! I notice every…single…detail, in a way that someone who grew up with it may not. Before I left, I was given some advice from a friend who has also traveled extensively. “When you find yourself somewhere amazing…” she told me “close your eyes. Pay attention to what you had seen, what you hear and what you smell. And then burn it into your memory.” So that’s what I did as I walked around on my own, I burned Piazza Novana into my long-term memory. When I started going through my RAW files for this shoot, I realized that I had forgotten how beautiful Rome really was. In fact, looking back…it felt more like a really vivid dream rather than a concrete reality. I closed my eyes and tried to bring back the memory that I was determined to collect that day. And just like that…the smells and sounds of that morning appeared. Rome came flooding back to me, in all its colorful glory…

For my editing process, I used the “Shine” preset from The Complete Collection across all of the photos that you see here today. It gave me the strong/defined look that I needed in order to make my photos as vibrant as my memories of Rome. I also used Makeup Brushes and Paint Brushes from The Brush Collection to even out my skin and add in extra enhancements to the colorful architecture and balconies. Before and after shots below…Well, I hope that your week is off to a perfect start. Look out for my next FREE Lightroom preset post in the next day or two. Until then…sweet dreams until sun beams find you!
