Lost and Found in Venice

Lost and Found in Venice

It’s 8:00 am on the second day of our Venice vacation. We’re staying at a questionable, but cozy Air B&B flat just steps away from the glorious Grand Canal. The air is heavy and full of moisture as we descend the stairs from our flat on the second floor to the main lobby. Venice has a distinctive dampness about it, similar to what it’s like in the first hour after it rains. Except in Venice, it seems like the streets never fully dry. I didn’t know it at the time, but we would soon find out exactly why the city was filled with so much moss and moisture! (more on that below…) We slowly pushed open the heavy front door and were met with the most magnificent Venetian sunshine we had seen yet! It was the perfect morning for photography…

Lost and Found in Venice

We set out into the city in search of architecture and beautiful scenes to bring back for the blog. Venice is one of those places where you don’t have to look too hard to find the magic. It’s all around you! We quickly discovered the day before that the city is a never ending maze of tight alleyways and dead ends. Just when you think you’ve found your way, you take too many lefts and end up lost. On our second day, we decided to just go with it, having found confidence in the chaos of getting lost the day before and finding our way back despite it. The Grand Canal was like our anchor in the city. As long as we knew what direction it was in, we could travel back along it to find our flat. Which came in handy many times during our stay. After capturing the shots that you see here and spending the day exploring, we were in desperate need of hydration. Which naturally came in the form of buying a bottle of red wine and bringing it back to our flat with a few slices of take away pizza…when in Rome…I mean Venice! lol We were devouring our meal at the kitchen table when all of a sudden I heard this frightening…gut wrenching siren ring out across the city…

I kid you not when I tell you that this loud repeating siren had me so startled that I was flashing back to World War II movies that I’d seen as a child. “What does this mean? What does this mean?” I kept saying over and over again. All I can say is…thank God for wifi! We looked up the sirens on the internet and found out that they were warning us that the city would be flooding that night. Flooding? We had heard about St. Mark’s Square flooding on the internet and decided that it wasn’t going to be a big deal. After all, we were 15 minutes away from that part of the city. Little did we know that it wasn’t only St. Mark’s Square that would flood… After some playing around on the computer, we decided to get back out there. We set out to find Ponte Dell’ Accademia, an impressive wooden bridge with a gorgeous view of the water. When we turned the corner, we were met with rapidly rising water in the street…like…Titanic style! Two men rushed over to us and tried to sell us plastic knee-high boots for 10 Euros each. “No thank you,” we told them, deciding that we would just find another way around. As we searched from alleyway to alleyway, we realized that the water was coming from all directions and there was no other way around. We went back to the men with our tails between our legs and bought the boots lol…

We walked into the calf high water and started sloshing around. To our absolute surprise, the water didn’t seem to phase the locals at all. They happily moved through it without a care in the world. As we walked a little further, we noticed that the first floor of all the shops and hotels were also completely flooded, with people going about their business in the water like it was nothing out of the ordinary. We came to this expensive looking restaurant, only to find the diners sitting with their feet completely submerged and the waiter bringing them wine and taking orders! It felt like the Twilight Zone! We were relieved to see that other tourists also thought that this behavior was rather strange. We had a good laugh with just about everyone who spoke English along the way. I met so many people that night from all over the world. It was really neat how this odd event seemed to bring everyone together…

I used Lightroom Presets from The Wedding Collection to edit my shots. Venice and sunny locations in general, can give you extreme highlights and shadows in your photos. Many of the presets in The Wedding Collection are built to correct this unfortunate reality. I used the “I do” Preset and layered over one of my Finishing Presets called “Subtle” to give me that perfectly balanced look. Before and After Below. Looking for more Presets? Check out The Complete Collection with over 345 unique looks to discover. Well… we ended up finding our bridge that night and making it back to the flat in one soggy piece. It’s funny how the most miserable moments of a trip often make the best stories. Don’t forget to come see me later this week for my next Free Lightroom Preset post…until then…sweet dreams until sun beams find you!
